Robert Burnell

AFTER 30 YEARS OF DAIRY FARMING THE SOUTH MANAWATU’S DRY, SANDY SOILS, HOROWHENUA FARMER ROBERT BURNELL HAS FOUND THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS FOR INCREASING PRODUCTION AND MAINTAINING COW CONDITION. Seven years ago the Burnell’s were milking 480 cows on their 162ha effective dairy farm between Foxton and Levin, producing around 162,000kgMS per year. Robert said it was around that time that they started adding more supplements into their farming system. Palm Kernel Extract (PKE), and high protein cotton meal and canola seed were added to their existing grass and maize silage mix. PKE is a high density ground meal that is the by-product of the Palm Kernel after the oil has been extracted. It is a high quality stock with 90% dry matter, 8 – 10% fat, 16 – 18% protein and is low in starch and sugars. Today, the Burnell’s are still milking 480 cows, including 80 winter calvers and 400 spring calvers. What’s different is the significant increase in their production – […]

Rob Poole

AFTER 25 YEARS OF USING FEED SUPPLEMENTS ON HIS SOUTH TARANAKI FARM, THE ONLY THING ROB POOLE CHANGES NOW IS THE ROTATION OF DIFFERENT FEED OPTIONS FOR HIS HERD, DEPENDING ON PRICE, AVAILABILITY AND THE TIME OF YEAR. Rob and his family farm two blocks in Manaia, South Taranaki – one is a 100 hectare farm and the other is 150 hectares – with 1050 cows on the two sites.  The farm is categorised as a System 5, with 30 to 40 per cent of total feed imported to the farm operations. Rob uses a combination of Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE), maize silage, Tapioca, Straw, dried distiller grains (DDG) and prolic. “The feed supplements give us flexibility to feed our stock and it means we are not affected by any particularly wet or dry periods that could have a negative impact on milk production. At the end of the day, it’s about maximising production and returns, and cost […]

Paul Bourke

AFTER SEEING SOME GOOD RESULTS IN HERD HEALTH, PREGNANCY RATES AND MILK PRODUCTION, TARANAKI DAIRY FARMER PAUL BOURKE IS A CONVERT WHEN IT COMES TO FEED SUPPLEMENTS AND NOW CONSIDERS HIS FARM OPERATION TO BE A LARGE-SCALE USER OF IMPORTED FEED. Paul is part owner of the 115 hectare farm in Pihama, Taranaki, and along with his wife Bernadette, and son Kieran and daughter-in-law Clare, they farm 500 cows, plus an extra 50 cows that they sell off in spring. Paul says he has always used feed supplements on his farm, including Prolic, grain, barley, maize and silage. He quickly added PKE to the mix when it became available. Palm Kernel Expeller (PKE) is a high density ground meal that is the byproduct of Palm Kernel after the oil has been extracted. It is a high quality stock food with 90% dry matter, 8-10% fat, 16-18% protein and is low in starch and sugars. “We are constantly looking for ways to […]

Neville Pearson

DAIRY FARMER NEVILLE PEARSON MORE CONTROL OVER EXTERNAL FACTORS SUCH AS WEATHER AND PASTURE GROWTH WHEN IT COMES TO IMPROVING PRODUCTION AND REDUCING COSTS. USING STOCK FEED SUPPLEMENTS GIVES MANAWATU.  Neville and his family own a 600 hectare farm located between Foxton and Sanson. This coming season he expects to be milking 1500 cows. Neville’s farm operation is predominately pasture-based, but he has used supplement feeds for the past 10 years to “plug the gaps”. “We are focused on growing quality pasture using appropriate fertiliser rates, but we also have other systems in place to support this. We now use stock feed supplements all year around, including a combination of palm kernel expeller (PKE), barley and maize silage.” The farm has approximately 60 hectares planted in maize silage, and Neville makes grass silage as surplus and conditions permit. He says the benefits of feed supplements have been noticeable, with a clear improvement in herd health, performance and breeding. “We have […]

Mark Rowlands

KAIRANGA DAIRY FARMER MARK ROWLANDS IS ALL ABOUT FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE FOR WELL-FED, HAPPY COWS. OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS THE USE OF SUPPLEMENTS HAS INCREASINGLY BECOME AN IMPORTANT PART OF ACHIEVING HIS FARM’S PRODUCTION GOALS. Mark moved to his 140ha Palmerston North farm five years ago from Taranaki. He started in the Manawatu milking a herd of 300 Holstein Friesians. That number has increased by 100 and today he owns 300 spring calvers and 100 autumn calvers producing 200,000kgMS – around 500kgMS per cow, per year. Mark said he started using Palm Kernel Extract (PKE) as soon as he shifted to Kairanga, because it was a much bigger operation. “PKE fits into my farming system comfortably. I’m really focused on getting the basics of good dairy farming right which means getting the balance right when it comes to the feed plan. PKE gives me flexibility and options and fits in nicely with my budget and production goals.” PKE is […]

It is a high quality stock food with 90% dry matter, 8-10% fat, 16-18% protein and is low in starch and sugars. “At the right price, PKE can be […]
